Dainty but tough Fairy Primulas

They may be dainty and sweet but Primula are actually tough and pretty hardy. One of our favourite winter colour bedding plants for shade and part shade, Fairy Primulas can be sown from seed very easily. Sowing Primulas can be done directly into the garden.

When to Sow them
The best planting time for Fairy Primulas in Gauteng is from March through to the end of April.

How to plant them:
As always, a well-prepared soil is half the battle. Liberal compost along with some bone meal and BioGanic dug into the soil and raked level is all you need. Rake the surface to a crumbly texture and you’re ready to sow the seeds.
Primula seed is incredibly fine, sprinkle the seed as one would salt as evenly as possible. Once sown do not cover the seeds. Do not pat them down or rake again either. Simply water them and they will find their own way into the soil at the correct depth.

Water them daily till they sprout and once they have two true leaves you can feed them with Multifeed Flowergro to boost them. They can easily be transplanted once established so don’t worry too much if they are too close together in the beginning.

#ProTip Primulas can also be sown in trays or small pots to plant out afterwards. Fill the containers with germination mix and then sprinkle the seeds onto the surface and water. Keep the containers in a cool spot till ready to be planted out.

Indigenous White African Daisies

Indigenous and a favourite spring plant for pollinators, these beautiful African Daisy flowers are perfect for growing in sunny dry spots needing little water after germination.  With a height of around 30cm and in flower in just 9 weeks after planting they are a wonderful addition to the winter garden.

When to Sow them:
The best planting time for Namaqualand Daisies in Gauteng is from Late March through April and May

How to plant them:
Needing very little in the line of fertiliser or soil preparation it could not be easier to plant African Daisies. Simply break the surface of the soil with a rake and rake level. Scatter seeds and run the rake over the area again, covering the seed with a thin layer of soil as you rake them in. You will still see some seeds when finished but don’t worry that’s ok, they will cover once you add water. Water daily till germinated and then once germinated you can water once a week to every ten days.

#ProTip African Daisies are extremely tough and waterwise. Do not feed them once germinated and once they have started to have open buds water them only every two weeks.
